Keeping a subjugated people in a continuous state of imbalance, fear, despair, and shock helps ensure their compliance with the status quo. Allowing them to speak and demonstrate gives them the semblance of power without having to make any sort of fundamental changes or meaningful concessions. When resentment continues to grow, the power structure co-opts the dissent, redirects the conversation, and sets groups of oppressed peoples against each other. As Malcolm X charged two months after MLK’s march on Washington, “...they took it over, it lost its militancy. … It became a picnic, a circus.” Lyrics inspired by the Langston Hughes poems Lenox Avenue Mural and Let America Be America Again.
