The very birth of this country was steeped in the exploitation of the working class. Needing cannon fodder to secure their economic freedom, the elite fired the imagination of the poor with radicalizing language about political freedom and democracy. Once the Declaration of Independence was read though, the poor immediately realized that the cost of war and revolution would be borne exclusively by them — the rich could avoid the newly instituted draft by simply paying for a replacement. In the ensuing riots, crowds often shouted, “Tyranny is tyranny let it come from whom it may.”
